"At least I smell nice... "

"so come on and breathe me in." Go ahead. Like my words and my show I am immaculately perfumed.  Though at the moment I smell more like faintly burnt green tea and lavender than my usual amalgam of chanel and vigorous ...  we'll say discussion. Either way it at least lives up to the spirit of the Young Knives lyric used here as our dedication. The show has going magnificently, as has business around town, (even if my vaunted update schedule has not)

HELIO SEQUENCE IS PLAYING LIVE ON MY SHOW THE 27th!! 'll be recording it in case you miss it going out live. And I'll be their performing inbetween sets at their concert on Halloween. Which i'm also s-upe-r enthused about. A Honolulu Halloween like I've always wanted.

In Memorium: Michael Swanson

This is by no means an exhaustive or comprehensive list of the music played on the show for today. It was request that I post it here and so I shall. I'm low on words for the moment, perhaps I will return shortly and add more.

some of the music that is unlisted was played from cd's and not from my computer which kept better track than I what was played today. Prominently among the unlisted songs was music by the Fleet Foxes and pieces of Elliott Smith some El Perro Del Mar.

A thank you to Carl, Dominic, Iman and Andrew for keeping me company during the show today. Our love and concern goes to Shane who has had to bear so deeply the brunt of all of this.

"La la la Kimi to ireba..."

"...Nanimo mienai, Kimi to nara, Dokodemo iku, Nanimo nai kara, Yoake demo, Itsudemo yobu, Yume no yohni shizunde iku" -Asobi Seksu "Strings"

Merciful christ I'll have to ask McVicker about what in the hell that means. (or Aly for that matter) but it sounds magnificent coming the KTUH studio speakers and top volume. Some abstract and perfect proclamation of summer demanding we pay tribute with revelry with dreams and sweat and pleasure. A hymn to sunbleached afternoons

Summer in Honolulu is marked by many things, none of them being weather. Which, like my attitudes toward soft skin pressed against my body in the morning, remain absolute and unchanging. What changes, what marks the season here in Honolulu's summer is the coming and going friends. Even removed from the living constraints of university you cannot escape the cycle of movement that is so deeply ingrained in Honolulu.

I type this now in the moments before I go to a goodbye dinner for a longtime friend of mine and DJing partner who goes to enter civil service in Cambodia. Dave Wilke who spins music at KTUH and around town as "Davey Shindig" is taking off and we'll all be wishing him the best tonight.

I'll return here and post more about it. maybe the text of what i'll say tonight at dinner if the world affords a moment for toasts and speaches. For now.. the playlist of the show..

Album Recommendation Day!

Well it's summertime, and much like Jesus, summer hits like the atom bomb. So it's about motherf*&%n' time that we hit back. To the max.

And if that doesn't suit your level of erudition perhaps the self-titled debut from New York's The Virgins will fare you better. A wry, fun, solid, rock-pop record to start us off with this summer. And before I get into discuss anything silly such as who they sound like, or what people are saying about them let me first say that 'Rich Girls" and "Teen Lovers" are absolute necessities. If you try to live your next few months without them you will in all likelihood sprain a fun muscle trying to keep up with all of those shining happy people who have the damn good sense to listen to what I tell them to. ;) So get to it. The record has a number of other good songs. ("One Week of Danger", "Fernando Pando", and "Hey Hey Girl" to my mind) on the whole it doesn't quite deliver as an ALBUM in that classical sense. But its a good time and you'll love it.

RIYL- early Strokes, later Rapture, better Duran Duran

Along similar lines, which is to say similar bullet trains to sticky summer bliss, King Of Prussia, recently came out with an EP entitled "Save The Scene" With a candor and lyrical nimbleness reminiscent of a Belle and Sebastian and the production style and aesthetic of an Elephant 6 band, "Save the Scene" delivers 7 tracks a few of them might be the crown indie-pop gems of the whole summer. "Spain in the Summertime" the EP's opener coils out like a faster jauntier "Legal Man" and lulls it's ways through an beautiful male female interchange. "Shades of Hippiedom" and "Terrarium" are lush and clever and inordinately pretty and stand out as its highlights, although the whole of the record is quite good. I will do cartwheels when they release a full length. A very promising band.

RIYL- Ladybug Transistor, Apples in Stereo, Belle & Sebastian

INTO THE VAULT--- To Be Added

and lastly sometimes points about culture must be made through parallel medium. There is a lot of bad radio and ugly soulless music pumped through the airwaves here in Honolulu. A writhing venomous centipede of cultural poison and malaise. And against such influences... I promise you.. the citizens of Honolulu and the world.. that I will remain stout and resolute..

A BEETLE FOR JUSTICE

"I know so many people who think they can do it alone.."

..They isolate their heads and stay in their safety zones"

"Now how can I come on
And tell them the way that they live could be better"
-The Beach Boys 'I Know There's An Answer"

Bill Callahan's favorite Beach Boys song. With good reason. A polemic against the death of youth and light. Certainly one of the most genuinely hopeful tunes from my sixties library. It exists in my mind as a kind of broad existential counterpoint to Radiohead's 'Let Down'. A song which also speaks to the broadly disaffected masses of people caught in cycles of depredation (who knows maybe I'm one of them) The difference of course between the two songs is in attitude. Wilson boldly and perhaps naively asserts that he knows (with almost religious fervor) that there is an answer to the apathy and unhappiness around him, Thom Yorke to contrast achieves catharsis through fantasy: "Someday I am going to grow wings, A chemical reaction" and commenting on the futility of this hope for escape "Hysterical and useless, hysterical and useless"

Another lyric from the song that always does me in: "They trip through there days, and waste all their thoughts at night" and certainly for A time as I have not been blogging or up late talking and actually connecting with the friends I have around me has seemed a damning indictment. But times are changing. The lyric reminds me also of the refrain from 'Put the book back on the shelf':

"you're always looking for a sign , but boy you blow it every time, you hear a voice begin to speak, you ignore it and go softly to sleep"
The kind of lyric that keeps you up late, burning your toes a little bit.

Comments on this show... A bit awkward in some of the selection at first. The pairing were not as ideal as I like to keep things. I've been meaning to to a more definitive and chronologically diverse Dream-pop set, and there are some sketches of it in the past few shows. There's a lot of just fun silly pop and rock tracks, which feel suited for summer. Look forward to more of that and a MIX CD WITH ART COLLABORATION FROM HONOLULU VISUAL ARTISTS in the coming weeks.

and tomorrow, a few album recommendations/reviews and cute videos. Stay tuned.

"Can You Believe I'm alive after all that.."

..picking panties off the floor with my cold cold hands."

My hands have been very cold in the mornings. The air-conditioning at my place is very effective and bringing out a morning chill. As for the other part of the lyric, I'll leave you make your assumptions. NEXT DOOR is on a very temporary hiatus and all of my close friends have vanished to bold new futures of visionary excitement and self-redefinition, or at least to new girlfriends and work schedules that keep them pre-occupied. Such is the way with summers in Honolulu..

And far be it from me to be while away hours forlorn at the decimation of my inner circle of friends. I once sported T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase "KILL YOUR FRIENDS, MAKE YOURSELF ANEW".. though joking at the high school friends I was leaving behind ot lives of idle misery and progressive alcohol and perscription drug dependencies. the slogan does have an uncomfortable truth to it.

Friends though marvelous in their supports and their abilities to invest even the most horrid and mundane tasks (cooking, eating food, sitting around, dancing at 80's night) with some semblance of joy and meaning, have a nasty habit. The habit of trying to make the person you are whne you hang out with them permanent. To hold you to being that one things that you are to them.

Sometimes, it is good to be allowed to be something fresh, something new.

That said, do call me up and harass me because in a scant few weeks I will not doubt be so cripped be desperate lonliness I will not be able to raise myself from bed. Except of course for the purpose of playing unbelievably sad music on the radio and making you all suffer through it with me.

"And when, when I picture you.. "

"..there upon your wall, forever in my view, ses monuments, all the places I will never go with you."

A warm sadness moved slightly in my stomach and then across my face as I looked at the vista splayed out from Sacre Coeur. A City stretched out glistening as a spring rain. The injustice of being there and without her... was striking. But exactly to whom injustice was done by this I have to admit was lost on me. Surely I must have felt cheated for her absence, and yet in no small part vindicated. I had made my way here and she had fallen by the wayside. An echo of a memory of a scratched up record. So I decided to build her from memory and place her there next to me. Her hair moving the way it had its tendency to. Her smirk and idle wit and condecension wreathed about my ersatz copine. Always to my right, always joking. When the time came to leave, she walked the other way.

So be it.. and so was the show. Friends recovering from surgery, friends preparing to leave, and at the center of it all of course my indomitable libido.

Summer Pop sets and and some more upbeat Alt Country will be fixtures all this summer. More guests and interviews. And the best indie show on KTUH. Stay tuned and welcome to the new blog.

Stood on gold

I'm going to write more here. Just give me a moment. I just tried and the rant was about a '7' and the inaugural post ought to be at least an '8.5'

soon then.
